Insanity of bank call centres (Abbey) B***dy Spanish banks.
Today I find I've ran out of cheques! So, off I go on-line to order a new cheque book - can't do it on-line, so ring up the good old colonial call centre. Can I ask you a few questions please - OK here goes. First up Name, DOB, easy peasy. Have you an overdraft facility and how much - getting closer... last transaction credit & debit, manage that (as I am logged on). Next question - when & where did you open this account!!! S**T!! This is asking me to remember where, more than 20 years ago I opened this account - was it Bracknell, or Reading or Wokingham, hmmm don't know. "Sorry can't send a cheque book to you, sir". What! You can't send a chequebook to my home address because I can't remember where in the 1980's I actually handed the forms in to open this account. Here I am logged on to my on-line account with the capacity to extract every last peeny and my overdraft facilty and I can't order a b****dy new cheque book which should have been sent to me. Yet another triumph of idiocy over common sense. | | Tuesday, July 11th, 2006 | | 12:35 pm |
Banks and security
I read Pete Birks comments on the FSA and the way they make life hard for anybody opening a new account, even if it is with a bank you've had an account with for years. There is a solution to the hassle of opening a new account, just steal somebody elses account or card! A work colleague has had somebody through a bank call centre with aminimum of fuss change address and contact numbers, replace 'lost' credit cards and add a new card holder with a fictitious name all in the space of a few days. Once set up spend, spend, spend - original card holder not even aware that this is going on - confused about having had no statement this month, checks on line and finds 10k of transactions on card in a matter of a few days! FSA is obsessed about money laundering and give no thought about protecting us from fraud! Amazing! | | Friday, July 7th, 2006 | | 11:20 am |
A long absence
I lost the will to keep posting on Poker despite playing on regularly. A new job was a major distraction and I also came to the conclusion that I was never going to be a money earning Pro (never really believed), but I still have a significant profit on my $150 load (plus $55 of added bonuses). The game has become quite a lot tighter as there appear to be more grinders sitting out there at all the levels of PLO. The Blog is going to continue again, but more general and will cover other general topics. | | Tuesday, July 12th, 2005 | | 10:39 pm |
Rollercoaster rides and observations Still slowly recovering from my last $200+ drop, steady progress until last night where I decided against my usual better judgement to play on a couple of wild looking $100 PP PLO tables. Well I made a profit in the end, but it was as frightening as it was exhilarating and apart from a couple of small bloopers (one costing $90 - not quite with EV I thought) I felt I played reasonably well, especially in the light of not losing it when things got really tough and recovering from $150 down to $50 up in the last 35 miniutes of play.
The hand tonight is an illustration of why I should stick to the $25 tables to build up BR a bit more before another serious foray into $100 land.
I was just playing 2 tables of $25 as they were quite aggressive and there was a fair bit of money on one of them. I'd struck lucky flopping 77Q on one table to a called pre-flop raise with 8775 double suited and finding the raiser was betting as if he owned QQ which happily for me he did. Even better he slow played it, bringing in an extra few $ from other players.
As I had that wrapped up I just called whilst I watched the following on table 2

MallardthrottlerII is all-In [$26.15] - wow monte carlo or....
** Dealing Turn ** [ 9c ] (!!!!)
** Dealing River ** [ Tc ]
MallardthrottlerII shows [ 6d, 2d, Kh, 2h ] a full house, Twos full of nines. - bust!!!!!
tightblood shows [ 3d, 9d, Ks, Kd ] a full house, Kings full of nines.
looseaggressiveone shows [ 3c, 9s, 4d, 2c ] a full house, Nines full of twos.
looseaggressiveone wins $27.25 from side pot #2 with a full house, Nines full of twos.
looseaggressiveone wins $77.55 from side pot #1 with a full house, Nines full of twos.
tightblood wins $50.60 from the main pot with a full house, Kings full of nines.
Oh my word, tightblood had what was expected, but the all-in raise on 2 small pair should have been suicidal. KK has EV of 0.842 post flop, and the 2 pair
is a 3-17 dog against the bottom set. The winner was actually on $175 later as I left. He did get lucky again, but also tempted people to overplay against him when he actually held good cards. Amazing... There was a bigger pot later that our hero above split after a 3-way all-in, fortune favours the brave!

I knew it wouldn't last........ I've smugly had a nice long and solid run of profit, racking up $450 gain in the last 2 weeks without playing too many hands. In the back of my mind is always the little question mark about whether a bad run will come along.
Well I got well and truly clobbered in the last few days. First was a session with a small loss where I lost 2 all-ins with EV's of .85 & .9 getting all-in on the river. I did recover with defended nut flush on the river with EV of .7, but the pots above were bigger. No other big hands that session, but I held my losses to $20.
This was just a warm up as I've had 5 all-ins and only won the smallest pot on a .636 EV. I lost a .501 chance ($100) and wasn't too worried about a 4-way $93 pot with EV of .278, but it would have been nice to get one. Then a 2:1 shot (.667) $59 goes astray and the killer was when my AAxx got a flop of A62 rainbow and I check raise 66xx into going all-in to lose to a runner-runner flush (all he had) to spill $60 on a close cert. I did get the consolation of busting somebody on a small pot as above and killing somebody drawing dead to my flopped boat, but almost $200 has gone astray in this passage of play - oh well.

Party Poker floatation I see that the Partygaming floatation price has been announced. I personally would not touch the issue with the proverbial barge pole, but I suspect that it will be a successful float as Poker seems to be the "in thing" at the moment. My view is also coloured by the feeling that if I owned Partygaming and it was going to justify the float price and generate the huge future earming, then I wouldn't want to share that future profit IF I was 100% confident that it was going to perform as predicted.
So, is the float a vote of no confidence in the concept from the founders?
On the Poker side, going well on the PLO at PP. I had a spell wher most of the games were tight, but a lot of passive post flop players meant that some pots could be stolen. Last night (Sunday) saw a $57 gain from just 48 played hands. I'm wondering when I next go into freefall, probably if the trends continue when I get to $1100 up as the last two downswings were at $700 and $900 profit. There seems to be a new influx of PLO players on PP, a lot of "old hands" are still around and a few sharks still infest the $25/$50 tables, but it is quite promising (from my perspective) to see new blood.

When is the best time to play PLO on PP? I have definite views on the above statement. I seriously feel that the best time to play is around 23:00 to 01:00 BST. The looseness on the $25/$50 tables is quite scary at time and you have to be able to shake off bad beats as people go heads up with you with EV=.2 or less.
Last night I ended up $70 in a 95 minute session. 5 big hands, first two I got all in at EV of 1.0, firstly my KK flops K99 check get bet and 1 other caller. Turn comes down Q and I decide to bet, get re-raise from player with Q9! The next one is where I make AT Str8 on river, K9 str8 raises pot and I only call him to avoid rake increase only to find I sweep and miss his last $2.
Sitting on a big stack now on the table, I get to lose a $47 pot when a player stays with his 2 pr against my made flush on turn and finds a boat on the river. He then loses it and more when he puts all bar $4 of that on a K high flush against my nuts and I'm raking $74. The same player then reraises on a 20% on the river and makes it to take $44 in a third pot! Strangely he then tightened up and actually eneded up $50 up as he managed to elicit a call from a player who gambled he was playing without nuts.
The problem with the 23:00 - 01:00 shift is that I have to get up for work at 06:30 and 5 hours is not enough time top sleep. The current good run may also be good cards finding fish, but who knows.
Current Mood: calm | | Thursday, June 16th, 2005 | | 9:05 am |
A tight night of PLO Last night was an interesting session of PLO on Party as I sat on 3 $25 tables and they were all really tight! Hardly a pre-flop raise in sight, almost none of the Monte Carlo action that often takes place (the one maniac bust out KK v. AA early on) on these tables.
Interestingly it was relatively easy to stay ahead as players were folding out to agression and it didn't even always require position. Maybe there is a maturing of the lunatic players and they have decided to play tight and lose the money slowly instead. | | Wednesday, June 15th, 2005 | | 3:38 pm |
Hiccup on Party Poker Was anybody else out there playing on Party last night when it had a brief "technical problem". I e-mailed customer support to complain but got fairly bland reply about resetting my bankroll of the table that got closed for maintenance.
The bigger issue I had was the game I was in that froze for almost 7 minutes and then restarted. The problem was that one of the players betting never rejoined in time and was folded changing the odds in the hand - I suspect him AND the other live player were both holding made straights whilst I had set with flush draw. Whilst I would have been happy to continue on a 3-way struggle, I couldn't see value on going heads up, so folded a couple of dollars, grrr.
What was noticable was the speed players, especially on the big tables bailed out, 44000 down to 21000 in no time at all - they all came back eventually when normal service was resumed. The other thing Party have started is $2000 $10-$20 PLO. Wow, is this scary. I watched last night one of the "NINE" tables running - a strong stomach and deep pockets needed there I feel. It has killed off the $1000 tables more or less and there is not much action on the $400 or $600 tables either. So, you play $25-$200 tables, or $2000, a big gap to bridge.
Big Dave thinks the $2000 tables will die as players lose money too fast, me, I'm not sure, I never understand the capacity of humanity to indulge in self-destructibve acts, I should know:-)

When the flop strikes...... The thing I remember about my slide towards the abyss is that I felt that the flop was always unkind, well at the moment, I've had some monsters.
Tonights jewel in the crown was very satisfying.

Quick evaluation shows I had from 820 possible hands after the flop 514 wins, 302 ties, 4 losses = 81.1%
It is also a warning if on the other side of this it is a prime case of having the nuts and not having enough equity to be worthy of a bet.
My bounce back (I must have "Bouncebackability") is almost $200 now, just $300 or so to go....

A big slump and some new hope! Perhaps it's the depression associated with my injured leg, but I have had the worst 2 weeks of PLO I could imagine. A combination of crap hands, some loose play and a couple of notable suck-outs have led my stack below the level of the start of this blog. The problem with a run like that is the danger of losing self belief as the losses pile up. Most of the time I felt I was playing well enough to win, but then I'd get knocked down badly when quads sunk my boat, or drawing to my Ace High flush gives somebody else a Str8 flush - those sort of events almost guarantee a losing session. Also I had an distinct lack of drawing power on the river, especially when I knew we were tying on the turn and I had opportunities to scoop. Things have started to turn, I managed an outrageous bluff when I suspected my opponent was trying to bully and finally I managed to draw properly in the following hand.
I was in late position and get dealt 7h 8h Td Jd, the sort of hand I like the look of!
A small raise from early position gets 3 callers, myself included and down comes the flop.
Ad Th 9h !!! Aha a drawing hand! Oh go on, so I bet and get 2 calls, super.
Turn comes with 7d!! Oh joy, I've got the nuts with outs coming from all angles.
So I bet and get a raise, fold, so all-in it is! I reckon around half the card are improvements and if my opponent is holding the nuts he is almost certainly doing it with some black cards, therefore has no flush draws.
River is a 7s and I duly collect the $56 in the pot. My opponent was sitting on 4d 8s 9c Js!!
A quick check shows I had 21/40 outs on the river. I wonder if my opponent pegged me as top 2 pr, or a set? This is the reason I feel for betting into your strong drawing hands as unless you are up against top set with other options, you may well get misread.
I must confess to blowing out in a similar situation, except that the opponent had 6 outs to my 2 on the river, with 32 as a tie. I had raised into it and was pulled all-in. As I suspected what he was holding, the raise cost my $8 as I would have probably folded after the river.
On the long bleed, I also noticed that I was winning a lot fewer hands as % than normal. I was down to under 4% in one long multi-table session even though I played loose pre-flop and reasonably aggressive afterwards. I folded almost nothing that would have won a showdown. Maybe I was just on a bad run - time will tell.

A bit of a bodyblow! +$321.73 A tough time of late. I had one of those long runs of poor hands, unfriendly flops etc that seem to happen at PLO every now and again. A 3% win percentage is not usually going to make money, but it should have done as I toughed it out and tried to make the most of the few decent hands that came along.

Ouch!!! 19th May +$283.88
The Ouch! refers to a torn hamstring in my left leg caused when I slipped at tennis and hyper-extended. Oh boy it hurt! Fitful night on the sofa bed as stairs were too painful last night. It is a bit better now, stairs are passable with care and some pain. Cricket is off the agenda for a while, so is Tennis, damn. Only three sessions on PP, the first was a 37 minute burst on 2 tables, started slowly, then a good run of hands saw a number of medium pots collected before I bust out the fish on the table. The next was a lesson in sticking to the agenda. I was $45+ to the good in no time at all and had planned to stop after an hour. The thing was that the play was loose and I decided to increase my profit only to have two nut flushes on the flop both get betaen on the river. then my baot sinks to a quad and I'm down $50. I spend the next 90 minutes grinding back to slight profit, good grief! This morning saw almost $40 gain from an hours play, spoilt only by a trash-talking idiot from the US who although winning was spouting a lot of crud. He did cause some players to tilt, although somebody helped by pointing out how to mute him. | | Monday, May 16th, 2005 | | 10:11 pm |
w/e 15th May + $216.68
I've meant to post something about last week, but a lack of energy has been a major factor in not doing so. I've also decided to play slightly more aggressively post flop after reading Big Dave's Blog and realising that I suffer occasionally from letting myself be bullied out of pots. The results have been good so far, with the above profit, despite playing for less than 12 hours elapsed time, so not too many Party Points earned! The bankroll was helped by the following hand to show the value of playing AA slowly on many occasions. The problem for one of my opponents is that he decided to slow play his perceived monster too! The question is that I'm not sure that I'd not take a beating myself under the circumstances, except that I may have been more aggressive than he was. I'm fairly confident that I'd NOT have thrown my money away with small boat, but only time can tell. Generally since then, things have gone well. I've had a few roller-coaster rides on the back of the more aggressive play, but the rate of gain has increased. Poker Tracker still has me as a fish though! Target for next week is still just profit and I'm going to try and limit myself to 10 hours on the $25 tables at Party. | | Friday, May 6th, 2005 | | 1:36 pm |
It must start somewhere
Inspired by Pete Birks interesting log, I've decided to follow the same path and follow my attempt to actually make some money out of on-line poker. I quite enjoy the game, but always used to have a problem with worrying about my bankroll. I could hold my own in low stakes/tourneys, but I used to come out in a rash at higher stakes tables as I fretted about losing to variance. My personal financial situation is better now, so I decided at the start of 2005 to play on-line again, focusing on PLO. In went $100 on PokerRoom, I doubled it up doubled again, drew out my stake, then moved to the bigger tables and promptly lost most of my profit. I'd also started on Party Poker, $150 in, and have oscillated between $200 & $830 in my account. The $832 was recent, but took a huge beating from a tilt session after 2 bad beats, so was down to $470 and is in some need of restoration. I've discovered 2 things about my play. 1) When in a good frame of mind, it is good enough to gain money steadily on the $25 PP PLO tables a steady average rate of $5-6/hour/table (I play up to 3 at a time) with some minor deterioration with multi-table action. 2) I still find it hard to cope with bad beat on the bigger tables and need to discipline myself to stay calm when things are all going pear shaped all around me. I actually enjoy playing the game, so I'm not going to spend time being a "bonus tart", so I'm going to stick to Party and may go back into Poker Room, but no further. I find switching interface to be a distraction. The "aim" is to consistently make a profit and in an ideal world to get enough to pull out more than $1000 this year and more as I get experience. I an NOT trying to be in any way a professional, the money is secondary to the enjoyment, but I hope to show that with above average play, it is possible to enjoy the game and make a small profit, we'll see. |
